Yellow Toadflax

Linaria vulgaris

Overview

Yellow toadflax (butter-and-eggs) is a perennial plant from Eurasia that invades rangelands, roadsides, and disturbed areas. It contains a glucoside chemical that is poisonous to livestock if eaten in large quantities. Its extensive root system makes it difficult to control.

How to Identify

Perennial 1-3 feet tall. Distinctive snapdragon-like yellow and orange flowers. Narrow, linear leaves. Spreads aggressively by both seeds and creeping roots.

Control Methods

Biological control using a weevil (Mecinus janthinus) is effective. Herbicide treatment for new infestations. Repeated treatments are necessary due to root regeneration.

Herbicide Recommendations

Picloram, clopyralid, or imazapic. Biological control (Mecinus weevil) is recommended for established infestations.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
