Report on EDDMapSRush Skeletonweed
Chondrilla juncea
Overview
Rush skeletonweed is a perennial plant from Eurasia that invades rangelands, roadsides, and grain fields. Its deep taproot and ability to regenerate from root fragments make it very difficult to control. It can reduce wheat yields by up to 50% in heavily infested fields.
How to Identify
Perennial with a basal rosette of dandelion-like leaves. Mature plants have nearly leafless, rush-like stems 1-4 feet tall with small yellow flowers. Milky sap when broken. Stems have downward-pointing bristly hairs near the base.
Control Methods
Biological control using a rust fungus and gall midge is available. Herbicide treatment for new infestations. Competitive seeding with desirable species.
Herbicide Recommendations
Picloram, clopyralid, or aminopyralid. Biological control agents are available through your county weed department.
⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
