Report on EDDMapSLeafy Spurge
Euphorbia esula
Overview
Leafy spurge is one of the most economically damaging invasive plants in the western United States. Its deep, extensive root system (up to 15 feet deep) makes it extremely difficult to control. It produces a toxic milky latex that irritates skin and is poisonous to cattle and horses.
How to Identify
Perennial 1-3 feet tall. Yellow-green flower bracts (not true flowers) in spring. Narrow, blue-green leaves. Milky white sap when broken. Spreads aggressively by both seeds and roots.
Control Methods
Biological control using flea beetles (Aphthona spp.) is the most effective long-term strategy. Herbicide treatment for new infestations. Combination of biological and chemical control is most effective.
Herbicide Recommendations
Picloram, imazapic, or quinclorac. Biological control (Aphthona flea beetles) is highly recommended for established infestations.
⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
