Cytisus scoparius

Overview

Scotch broom is a perennial shrub from Europe that was widely planted for erosion control and ornamental use. It is now illegal to sell in Utah. It invades roadsides, disturbed areas, and open forests, forming dense thickets. It increases fire risk and is toxic to livestock.

How to Identify

Perennial shrub 3-10 feet tall. Bright yellow pea-like flowers. Green, angled stems with small leaves. Distinctive black seed pods that snap open audibly when ripe.

Control Methods

Hand-pull or cut before seed set. Herbicide treatment for larger infestations. Do not plant or purchase.

Herbicide Recommendations

Triclopyr or picloram. Apply in spring or fall.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
