Overview
Scotch broom is a perennial shrub from Europe that was widely planted for erosion control and ornamental use. It is now illegal to sell in Utah. It invades roadsides, disturbed areas, and open forests, forming dense thickets. It increases fire risk and is toxic to livestock.
How to Identify
Perennial shrub 3-10 feet tall. Bright yellow pea-like flowers. Green, angled stems with small leaves. Distinctive black seed pods that snap open audibly when ripe.
Control Methods
Hand-pull or cut before seed set. Herbicide treatment for larger infestations. Do not plant or purchase.
Herbicide Recommendations
Triclopyr or picloram. Apply in spring or fall.
