Euphorbia myrsinites

Overview

Myrtle spurge is a succulent perennial plant from the Mediterranean that was widely sold as an ornamental ground cover. It is now illegal to sell in Utah. Its milky latex sap causes severe skin irritation and is toxic if ingested. It invades roadsides, disturbed areas, and natural areas.

How to Identify

Succulent perennial with trailing stems 6-12 inches long. Blue-gray fleshy leaves arranged in a spiral. Yellow-green flower bracts in spring. Milky white sap when broken.

Control Methods

Wear gloves and eye protection - sap causes severe irritation. Hand-pull or dig before seed set. Herbicide treatment for larger infestations.

Herbicide Recommendations

Picloram or 2,4-D. Wear protective clothing when handling - sap is a severe irritant.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
