Overview

Cogongrass is considered one of the world's worst invasive plants. It forms dense monocultures, increases fire frequency and intensity, and is nearly impossible to eradicate once established. It is illegal to sell or propagate in Utah.

How to Identify

Perennial grass 2-4 feet tall. Distinctive white, silky seed heads. Leaves have an off-center white midrib. Spreads aggressively by rhizomes and wind-blown seeds.

Control Methods

Report any sightings immediately to your county weed superintendent. Herbicide treatment is required. Multiple treatments over several years are necessary.
