Quackgrass

Elymus repens

Overview

Quackgrass is a perennial grass from Eurasia that invades agricultural fields, roadsides, and disturbed areas. Its extensive rhizome system makes it very difficult to control. It reduces crop yields and competes aggressively with desirable grasses.

How to Identify

Perennial grass 1-4 feet tall. Distinctive clasping auricles (ear-like projections) at the leaf base. Flat, rough-textured leaves. Spreads aggressively by rhizomes.

Control Methods

Tillage can reduce populations but spreads rhizome fragments. Herbicide treatment is most effective. Competitive seeding with desirable grasses.

Herbicide Recommendations

Glyphosate or fluazifop applied when actively growing. Multiple treatments may be required.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
