Report on EDDMapSHoundstongue
Cynoglossum officinale
Overview
Houndstongue is a biennial plant from Europe that invades rangelands, forests, and roadsides. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that cause irreversible liver damage in livestock. Its Velcro-like seeds attach to fur and clothing, aiding dispersal. A significant problem in the Skyline region.
How to Identify
Biennial with large, hairy rosette leaves in first year. Second-year plants 2-4 feet tall with small maroon flowers. Distinctive burr-like seeds that attach to fur and clothing. Leaves have a musty, mouse-like odor.
Control Methods
Hand-pull or dig rosettes before flowering. Mowing before seed set. Herbicide treatment on rosettes. Check animals and clothing for seeds after field work.
Herbicide Recommendations
Picloram, clopyralid, or metsulfuron applied to rosettes in fall or early spring.
⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
