Perennial Pepperweed (Tall Whitetop)

Lepidium latifolium

Overview

Perennial pepperweed is a highly invasive plant from Eurasia that forms dense stands in wetlands, riparian areas, and irrigated fields. Its extensive root system and high salt tolerance make it difficult to control. It can eliminate native wetland vegetation and reduce waterfowl habitat.

How to Identify

Perennial 2-5 feet tall. Dense clusters of tiny white flowers. Leaves are lance-shaped, blue-green, and waxy. Spreads aggressively by both seeds and creeping roots. Forms large colonies.

Control Methods

Herbicide treatment is the most effective control method. Multiple treatments over several years are required. Biological control agents are being researched.

Herbicide Recommendations

Imazapyr or chlorsulfuron. Requires permits near water. Multiple treatments are necessary.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
