Purple Starthistle

Centaurea calcitrapa

Overview

Purple starthistle is a biennial or short-lived perennial from the Mediterranean that invades rangelands, roadsides, and disturbed areas. Its sharp spines make it unpalatable to livestock and can injure animals and people. Dense infestations significantly reduce forage production.

How to Identify

Branching biennial 1-3 feet tall. Purple flower heads surrounded by long, sharp spines. Leaves are deeply lobed. Spines are 1-2 inches long and very sharp.

Control Methods

Hand-pull or dig rosettes before flowering. Mowing before seed set. Herbicide treatment on rosettes.

Herbicide Recommendations

Clopyralid, picloram, or aminopyralid applied to rosettes in fall or spring.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
