Camelthorn

Alhagi maurorum

Overview

Camelthorn is a deep-rooted perennial shrub from the Middle East that is extremely difficult to control once established. It forms dense, impenetrable thickets along waterways and in agricultural areas. Its extensive root system can extend 20+ feet deep.

How to Identify

Thorny perennial shrub 1-4 feet tall. Small pink pea-like flowers along thorny branches. Small reddish-brown seed pods. Spreads aggressively by rhizomes.

Control Methods

Repeated cutting or mowing weakens plants over time. Herbicide treatment is most effective but requires multiple applications over several years. Biological control is being researched.

Herbicide Recommendations

Picloram, triclopyr, or glyphosate. Multiple treatments over 3-5 years are typically required for effective control.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
