Overview

Goatsrue is a federally listed noxious weed native to Europe that is highly toxic to livestock, particularly sheep. It forms dense stands in wetlands, along waterways, and in pastures. Each plant can produce up to 135,000 seeds that remain viable for up to 10 years.

How to Identify

Tap-rooted perennial 2-5 feet tall. Compound leaves with 9-15 leaflets. Light purplish-white pea-like flowers in clusters. Narrow, elongated seed pods.

Control Methods

Crop rotation, deep tilling, and digging for small infestations. Herbicide treatment is effective. Report all sightings to your county weed superintendent immediately.

Herbicide Recommendations

Picloram, clopyralid, or metsulfuron. Multiple treatments are typically required.
