Puncturevine (Goathead)

Tribulus terrestris

Overview

Puncturevine is an annual plant from the Mediterranean that is a serious problem for livestock, wildlife, and cyclists. Its hard, spiny seed pods (goatheads) can puncture tires, injure animals' hooves and mouths, and penetrate shoes. It thrives in hot, dry conditions.

How to Identify

Prostrate annual with mat-forming growth. Small yellow 5-petaled flowers. Distinctive hard, spiny seed pods with 2-4 sharp spines. Compound leaves with small leaflets.

Control Methods

Hand-pull before seed set. Mowing is not effective. Herbicide treatment in early growth stages. Biological control using a weevil is available.

Herbicide Recommendations

2,4-D or dicamba applied in early spring. Biological control (Microlarinus weevils) is available through your county weed department.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
