Jointed Goatgrass

Aegilops cylindrica

Overview

Jointed goatgrass is an annual grass from Eurasia that is a serious problem in winter wheat fields. It is closely related to wheat and can hybridize with it, creating herbicide-resistant plants. Dense infestations can reduce wheat yields by 50% or more.

How to Identify

Annual grass 1-2 feet tall. Distinctive cylindrical seed head that breaks into segments at maturity. Each segment has 1-2 seeds with long awns. Resembles wheat but with a jointed, cylindrical head.

Control Methods

Crop rotation away from winter wheat. Use certified weed-free seed. Herbicide treatment in wheat fields with selective herbicides.

Herbicide Recommendations

Metribuzin or diclofop-methyl in wheat fields. Consult with your county extension agent for current recommendations.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
