Hoary Cress (Whitetop)

Cardaria spp.

Overview

Hoary cress is a perennial plant from Eurasia that invades agricultural fields, roadsides, and disturbed areas. Its extensive root system and ability to regenerate from root fragments make it very difficult to control. Dense infestations can significantly reduce crop yields.

How to Identify

Perennial 1-2 feet tall. Dense clusters of small white flowers. Leaves are gray-green and hairy, clasping the stem. Heart-shaped seed pods. Spreads aggressively by creeping roots.

Control Methods

Herbicide treatment is the primary control method. Multiple treatments over several years are required. Competitive seeding after treatment.

Herbicide Recommendations

Chlorsulfuron, metsulfuron, or 2,4-D. Apply in spring when plants are actively growing.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
