Giant Reed

Arundo donax

Overview

Giant reed is one of the world's most invasive plants. It forms massive, impenetrable stands along waterways, displacing native riparian vegetation and wildlife habitat. It consumes enormous amounts of water and increases fire risk. Stems can grow up to 30 feet tall.

How to Identify

Bamboo-like grass with hollow stems up to 30 feet tall. Large, broad leaves 2-3 inches wide. Feathery plume-like seed heads in late summer. Spreads by rhizomes and stem fragments.

Control Methods

Cutting alone is not effective - plants resprout vigorously. Herbicide treatment combined with cutting is most effective. Biological control agents are available.

Herbicide Recommendations

Imazapyr or glyphosate applied to cut stems or foliage. Multiple treatments over several years required. Requires permits near water.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
