Report on EDDMapSDalmatian Toadflax
Linaria dalmatica
Overview
Dalmatian toadflax is a perennial plant from the Mediterranean that invades rangelands, roadsides, and disturbed areas. It is more aggressive than yellow toadflax and can form dense stands that eliminate native vegetation. Its waxy leaves make herbicide penetration difficult.
How to Identify
Perennial 2-4 feet tall. Large yellow snapdragon-like flowers with orange throat. Broad, waxy, heart-shaped leaves that clasp the stem. Spreads aggressively by creeping roots.
Control Methods
Biological control using a weevil (Mecinus janthinus) is effective. Herbicide treatment requires surfactant to penetrate waxy leaves. Repeated treatments are necessary.
Herbicide Recommendations
Picloram or clopyralid with surfactant. Biological control (Mecinus weevil) is recommended for established infestations.
⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
