Hyoscyamus niger

Overview

Black henbane is a highly toxic annual or biennial plant from Eurasia. All parts of the plant are poisonous to humans and livestock, containing tropane alkaloids. It has a distinctive unpleasant odor. Even small amounts can be fatal to children.

How to Identify

Annual or biennial 1-3 feet tall. Sticky, hairy, unpleasant-smelling leaves. Distinctive cream-colored flowers with purple veins and a purple center. Seed pods are enclosed in a spiny calyx.

Control Methods

Wear gloves when handling - all parts are toxic. Hand-pull or dig before seed set. Herbicide treatment for larger infestations.

Herbicide Recommendations

2,4-D or dicamba applied in early growth stages. Dispose of plant material carefully.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
