Bermudagrass

Cynodon dactylon

Overview

Bermudagrass is a perennial grass from Africa that invades agricultural fields, roadsides, and disturbed areas. While used as a turf grass in some areas, it is invasive in Utah (except Washington County) and can form dense mats that crowd out native vegetation.

How to Identify

Low-growing perennial grass with distinctive finger-like seed heads (3-7 spikes radiating from a central point). Spreads aggressively by stolons and rhizomes. Leaves are flat and narrow.

Control Methods

Repeated tillage can reduce populations. Herbicide treatment is most effective. Competitive seeding with desirable species.

Herbicide Recommendations

Glyphosate or fluazifop. Multiple treatments are typically required.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
