Syrian Beancaper

Zygophyllum fabago

Overview

Syrian beancaper is a perennial shrub from the Middle East that invades arid and semi-arid rangelands. It is toxic to livestock and can form dense stands that displace native vegetation. Its deep root system makes it difficult to control.

How to Identify

Perennial shrub 1-3 feet tall with fleshy, paired leaflets. Yellow-orange flowers with 5 petals. Distinctive cylindrical seed pods. Somewhat succulent appearance.

Control Methods

Mechanical removal is difficult due to deep roots. Herbicide treatment is the most effective control method. Multiple treatments are typically required.

Herbicide Recommendations

Picloram, triclopyr, or imazapyr. Consult with your local weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
