Mediterranean Sage

Salvia aethiopis

Overview

Mediterranean sage is a biennial or short-lived perennial that forms large rosettes in its first year and produces tall flowering stalks in subsequent years. It is highly competitive in dry rangelands and can reduce forage production significantly.

How to Identify

Large white-woolly rosette in first year, up to 3 feet across. Second year produces branched stems 2-4 feet tall with white flowers. Leaves are deeply lobed and covered in white woolly hairs.

Control Methods

Hand-pull or dig rosettes before flowering. Mowing can prevent seed set but does not kill the plant. Herbicide treatment is most effective on rosettes.

Herbicide Recommendations

Picloram or 2,4-D applied to rosettes in fall or spring. Repeat treatments may be necessary.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
