African Rue

Peganum harmala

Overview

African rue is a toxic perennial shrub native to the Mediterranean region. It is highly toxic to livestock and humans, contains hallucinogenic alkaloids, and forms dense stands that crowd out native plants. It thrives in disturbed, arid environments.

How to Identify

Bushy perennial 1-2 feet tall with fleshy, deeply divided leaves. White 5-petaled flowers. Distinctive round seed capsules that split open when ripe. Strong unpleasant odor when crushed.

Control Methods

Hand-pulling is effective for small infestations but wear gloves as the plant is toxic. Herbicide treatment is recommended for larger infestations. Biological control agents are being researched.

Herbicide Recommendations

Triclopyr, picloram, or 2,4-D. Multiple treatments over several years may be necessary due to persistent seed bank.

⚠️ Always read and follow pesticide label directions. Contact your county weed superintendent for site-specific recommendations. Permits may be required near water.
